Concerns were raised in the Public Accounts Committee meeting today about the Tavua and Ba end museum projects that had no evidence of approval noted in the minutes of the Ba Town Council to carry out the project in 2013.
Committee’s Deputy Chairman Mohammed Dean says this was a very serious issue and there should have been action taken because there was no approval obtained from the Fiji Roads Authority, the Water Authority of Fiji and Fiji Sugar Corporation for access, right of way and site permit for construction.
While responding to the queries, Council CEO Dip Narayan said the then Special Administrator of the Council was terminated from his position.
Dean says this was a waste of taxpayers’ money.
Meanwhile the 2013 Auditor General’s Report on Municipal Councils states that the council admits that no feasibility study was done but reiterates that most of the items were donated by the public and the ideas and construction works were carried out by the Council workforce.
It stated that these projects were solely administered and supervised by the then Special Administrator and the Council followed the instructions given by him.
The Report also states that improper records were kept by the Council for the cost of the construction for audit verification.
