Reports of scrap metal thefts are emerging again and Telecom Fiji Limited has revealed that they have suffered a loss of $2 million this year.
TFL General Manager Corporate Services Samuela Vadei told Fijivillage that most of their cables have been stolen from the Western and Central Eastern Division adding that he believes that the driving factor behind the theft is the price of copper which has increased in the world market.
Vadei said they are losing a lot of revenue as a result of these cable thefts.
He also said a decree is in place to regulate the activities of scrap metal dealers however it is insufficient.
Meanwhile, Fiji Sugar Corporation has also raised concern on the theft of a number of FSC rail lines and carts.
FSC said the scrap metal theft saga is a menace to the corporation and there have been cases of rail lines and carts being stripped overnight and taken to the dealers for cash.
FSC also said while their own people on the ground need to be more vigilant with their assets which are scattered over a large area of the cane regions, FSC is relying heavily on the assistance of tip-offs from the general public.
Fiji Police Director Operations, SSP Rusiate Tudravu said their operation on scrap metal theft is ongoing and they will be coming down hard on people involved in scrap metal theft.
