Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry is now disappointed with Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr for welcoming Fiji’s 2013 constitution.
Chaudhry has told Pacific Beat that Australia should continue to oppose the Fijian government.
When Fijivillage contacted Chaudhry on the comments he has made to Pacific Beat, he refused to say anything.
Meanwhile, following a statement by the Australian High Commission in Fiji, Senator Carr shared the sentiment in a statement that the constitution represents an important step forward for Fiji’s commitment to hold elections by September 2014 and Australia stands ready to support Fiji in making credible steps towards a return to democracy.
Carr said Australia would continue to encourage a constitutional process which results in a credible election, including an independent elections office, participation by political parties and civil society, freedom of expression and assembly, independent elections observation and general acceptance of the election outcome by the people of Fiji.
