Case of 155 families in Veidogo Informal Settlement given eviction notices before High Court

The matter where the 155 families living in Veidogo Informal Settlement in Vatuwaqa were given eviction notices was called before Suva High Court Judge Justice Dane Tuiqereqere.

According to court documents, more than 4 hectares of plot is owned by K. Bhindi Bros Ltd, the residents are allegedly unlawfully occupying the property and have constructed illegal dwellings.

In an affidavit, the Secretary of the company, Sagar Dhanji alleges notices to vacate the property within a month were served to residents of 50 homes on the 14th of February this year while another 105 notices were served on the 20th of June.

He says the notice has since expired and the residents continue to occupy the property without consent or license.

Justice Tuiqereqere has given the residents to sort out issues regarding their representation.

The matter will be called on the 30th of this month when Justice Tuiqereqere is expected to set a hearing date.
