Butcher boss questions vetting process

One of the leading meat providers in the country Leylands Limited is questioning the vetting process of meat infected with Brucellosis before being released into the market.

Leylands General Manager Chris Yee said despite reassurance on the safety of the meat, customers are just not buying beef at this point in time which in turn affects business.

Yee said when news of the Swine Flu broke, customers did not buy pork for that time period until it was determined that it was safe to eat.

He said the public and butchers need to know the exact process which determines the safety of meat for market consumption.

Ministry of Primary Industries spokesperson Jo Uluilakeba is expected to comment later on this issue.

30 infected cattle from a Wainivesi farm in the Tailevu North area were slaughtered yesterday and a further 60 have been transported to the Nasinu abattoir for culling tomorrow.

More than 300 cattle are expected to be slaughtered based on the latest test results.
