Azimulah now a free man after conviction was quashed

Ashik Ali Azimulah walked away a free man today after Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe allowed his appeal, quashed the conviction against him and set his sentence aside.

Azimulah was sentenced to two years imprisonment by the Magistrates Court on the 12th of May this year for the charge of obtaining financial advantage.

He had appealed his conviction on the ground that the summary of facts failed to prove the elements of the offence.

According to the summary of facts, it was alleged that Azimulah had taken an advantage of $250.

Justice Rajasinghe stated that there is no evidence that Azimulah knew that he was not entitled to receive that money from the complainant.
