Australia’s Minister for International Development and the Pacific, Zed Seselja says the Australian Government is not buying Digicel Pacific with Telstra but they are working with Telstra to explore the feasibility of Telstra acquiring Digicel Pacific.

Seselja says they are strongly supportive of the interest of Australian businesses, including Telstra and exploring opportunities to invest in critical infrastructure in the Pacific.

He says he cannot reveal the amount of funding that the Australian Government is making available to Telstra to back its bid for Digicel’s Pacific operations.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times has stated that Telstra is reported to have made a US$2 billion bid for Digicel’s Pacific operations.

The Irish Times says reports from Australia states that more than $1.5 billion of taxpayer money could go to funding the deal amid concerns that a Chinese company could take control of the assets.
