A man who raped and sexually assaulted his niece has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by High Court Judge, Justice Riyaz Hamza.
Justice Hamza ruled that the man spent 3 months in custody and that will be taken in as time served and the man will now serve 9 years and 9 months.
It was heard in court that the incidents happened in March 2017 in Suva while the victim was 19 years old and the man was 58 years old at the time of the incident.
Justice Hamza says the man took advantage of the victim’s vulnerability , helplessness and naivety.
The Judge says the man was the uncle of the victim and he should have protected her but instead he breached the trust that was expected of him.
