8 maternal deaths last year
Eight women died during pregnancy last year and according to statistics majority of them were in relation to unplanned pregnancies where the expecting mothers put their own health at the bottom of the priority list due to family pressure.

While revealing statistics on maternal deaths at the Health Symposium, CWM Hospital’s obstetrician, Doctor James Fong said two of the eight deaths were linked to leptospirosis.

Some of these women who passed away last year were not supported at home as their pregnancy was questioned by family members. This resulted in them not going for pre-natal clinics when they had complications.

Doctor Fong also said cases of shortness of breath during pregnancy and other cases should also be managed well.

Doctor James Fong said they have delivered 846 babies so far this month at CWM Hospital.

He said about 900 deliveries are expected by the end of this month.

He recommended that it would be good to conduct a research on how many women have unplanned pregnancies as it would be wise to detect complications during the early stages of pregnancy.
