6 escape as Samabula fire destroys commercial property valued at more than $400,000

Six people were inside the building when the fire started in Samabula last night but all were able to evacuate safely after a tenant alerted the others.

The National Command Centre received the emergency call at around 9:06pm and firefighters from Suva Fire Station arrived at the scene within five minutes.

The firefighters found the large commercial property fully engulfed in flames.

The building was being used for offices, rental car operations and spare parts storage.

Fire crews from Suva and Valelevu Fire Stations worked to contain the blaze and protect nearby properties from being affected.

The fire destroyed the property with losses estimated at around $400,000.

National Fire Authority Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane says the increasing number of structural fires around the country is alarming and serves as a reminder for families and business operators to take fire safety seriously.

Sowane says fortunately no lives were lost in this incident because those inside managed to evacuate quickly, highlighting the importance of having an escape plan and ensuring everyone knows what to do during a fire emergency.

He is urging homeowners, tenants and business operators to regularly inspect electrical wiring, avoid overloading power outlets and never leave cooking unattended.

The National Fire Authority is also advising households and businesses to discuss and practice escape plans so everyone knows the safest way out during emergencies.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing.
