Fifty villages in Fiji will be gifted with rare eco-based dumpsites that will convert community waste into useful composted manure.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Environment Dr Mahendra Reddy while launching the e-garburator program in Bavu Village outside Nadi.

This program prepares communities on effectively managing waste generated at homes.

Dr Reddy says with the eco-based dumpsites, there is no excuse now for irresponsible dumping of wastes anywhere else in the community.

He says Phase 1 of the program is designed to raise awareness about waste composting.

The Minister also reiterated the several hidden benefits that accompany such an exercise being carried out.

He adds these benefits would include market the direct values of the materials collected rather than getting strewn all over the place, the avoided costs of collection and disposal, including external costs of disposal to the landfills and the direct consumer benefits including composting.

The Minister assured villagers that upon successful completion of the first fifty facilities, the Ministry would consider the next batch of communities for Phase – II of the program.
