A three-year-old boy has drowned in the sea after he was allegedly left alone at his home in Welagi Village in Taveuni.
Police say his guardian went to the shop and when she returned, she discovered the child missing, and a search was immediately conducted.
The boy was later found floating in the sea.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted as investigation continues, which will also examine the element of alleged negligence.
Police are reminding parents and guardians that young children should never be left unsupervised, as accidents can occur within a matter of seconds.
With the school holidays approaching and some students already opting to stay home, the Police is urging parents and guardians to prioritise supervision.
They are also advising that children should never be asked to care for other children, and that guardians must ensure close supervision by a trusted adult.
