3 youths in police custody after allegedly threatening to kill police officers last night in Nadi

Three youths are in Police custody after they allegedly threatened a Police Patrol Car team last night at Namotomoto Village in Nadi.

In a statement, Police say the three suspects when warned to clear the area allegedly threatened the officers stating they would allegedly kill them in a similar way as to how their late comrade died in Lautoka last week.

Police say a backup team was called in and the three were arrested and kept in custody at the Nadi Police Station.

In a separate case, a Police officer was allegedly assaulted outside the Grantham Police Post while attending to a report of causing trouble.

Police say the suspect was a passenger in a taxi that had stopped at the Community Post as the driver sought help with the suspect who was causing trouble adding the suspect when confronted allegedly assaulted the police officer whereby he sustained injuries.

The man was overpowered by another officer and taken into custody.

Acting Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu says the attacks on the police officers who are simply conducting their duties to keep Fiji safe, must stop.

Tudravu says Police officers put their lives on the line every day and when one is injured or loses their life while executing his or her duties, it impacts their service delivery, not to mention the pain and suffering it causes to the officers’ families.

Tudravu says they will not take threats against their officers lives lightly, and from January to September a number of their officers have been attacked while executing their duties, and last week the death of one of their own has brought to the forefront the real threats confronting their officers who are simply doing their job.

According to statistics by Police,  there have been 129 cases this year where Police officers were victims of Serious Assault, 30 cases of assault causing actual bodily harm, 8 cases of act with intent to cause grievous harm and 4 cases of common assault.
