3 men who allegedly beat up an elderly couple appear in court

Three men who allegedly beat up an elderly couple and demanded money from them in Samabula last month appeared before High Court Judge Justice Vincent Perera today.

Anasa Lenikali, Joeli Cama and Seru Koroi are charged with aggravated robbery and act with intent to cause grievous harm.

It is alleged that the three men entered the home of a 64‑year‑old man through the sitting room window after using pinch bars and stones.

The court earlier heard that the complainant and his wife were still sleeping when the three men approached them in their bedroom and then demanded $600.

It is also alleged that the men beat up the 64‑year‑old man with a pinch bar and when the wife went to save him, they hit her with a pinch bar then later dragged her into the room where they hit her head again with a pinch bar resulting in her getting unconscious.

It was further alleged that after the man saw his wife unconscious then he gave the three accused $600 after which they fled the house.

The third accused has withdrawn from the services of Legal Aid and has engaged a private counsel.

The case has been adjourned to the 23rd of this month.
