The three major correctional facilities in the country are overcrowded.
Natabua Prison which has a capacity to hold 166 inmates is accommodating 235 inmates while Suva Prison which can hold 224 inmates currently has 317 inmates.
The Vaturekuka Prison in Labasa which has a capacity to hold 86 inmates currently has 114 convicted and remanded prisoners.
Fiji Corrections Spokesperson, Josefa Matau said there is a total of 1,233 inmates in our prisons out of which 703 are between 16 to 30 years of age.
Matau said the overcrowding is due to the high number of remand cases and they are building two new remand centers in Suva and Nasinu Prisons.
He added that they are also relocating low risk inmates to other correctional facilities in a bid to address the issue.
