A grid extension project which opened today in Wainibuka has given reliable power supply to 289 families by connecting five villages and three settlements.
The project which was opened by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama was completed at a cost of just over 1.7 million dollars.
Bainimarama says these communities have not only been made safer at all hours of the day but they now have access to an entire world of new possibilities.
He says children can study into the night, they can spend more time with families and loved ones and they no longer have to depend on inefficient diesel generators or lantern lamps to keep the lights on.
Bainimarama adds this project is part of a massive programme of rural electrification which the government is funding throughout the country.
The Prime Minister says this year alone they have allocated 42.6 million dollars to electrify more than 6,000 homes in rural areas across Fiji.
He says this is only one part of the larger Korovou to Rakiraki Grid Extension under development by the government.
