2 defensive driving course instructors, a road marshall and 5 private individuals appear in court

Two defensive driving course instructors, a road marshall and five private individuals appeared in the Nasinu Magistrates Court in the last hour.

According to the FICAC charges, defensive driving instructor and LTA Training Officer, Manoa Naitala is charged with three counts of corrupt transaction with agents.

It is alleged that Naitala intended to deceive the Land Transport Authority by using various documents containing false information, in respect of which the LTA has interest in, namely the Defensive Driving Course test results and attendance details of Manoj Kumar, Jerry Nand and Frank Whippy, in the Nominal Roll form, knowing that the documents will mislead LTA.

The alleged incidents occurred on or about 20th April this year.

Naitala has been remanded in custody until tomorrow as he has to provide two sureties.

The second defensive driving instructor Rajnesh Prasad is charged with two counts of corrupt transaction with agents, one count of bribery and one count of general dishonesty - obtaining a gain.

It is alleged that he falsified documents for the defensive driving course certificate for Raymond Singh and Mohammed Yunus.

It is also alleged that Prasad accepted an advantage of $150 from Shan Mohammed, a person acting on behalf of Mohammed Yunus, on account of performing an act in his capacity as a public servant in LTA.

These alleged incidents occurred on or about June 2015.

Prasad is remanded in custody until tomorrow to present suitable sureties.

Road Marshall, Ranjina Hicks is charged with 4 counts of general dishonesty - obtaining a gain.

It is alleged that Hicks made arrangements with Gitendra Prasad, Rakesh Kumar, Frank Whippy and Saras Wati for the issuance of Defensive Driving Certificates without following due processes of the LTA.

Hicks also allegedly received $250, $300, $176 and $50 in return for these certificates.

Jerry Nand, Manoj Kumar, Mohammed Yunus, Gitendra Prasad and Frank Whippy are each charged with attempting to obtain a gain.

They allegedly attempted to acquire Defensive Driving Certificates without following due processes of LTA.

These alleged incidents occurred between 2015 and 2016.

Frank Whippy has been remanded in custody till tomorrow.

Jerry Nand, Yunus Ali, Manoj Kumar and Gitendra Prasad have been released with strict bail conditions.

They will take their plea on the 9th of January next year.
