19-year-old pleads guilty to damaging Lord Hanuman statue in Labasa, remanded in custody

A 19-year-old man who damaged a Lord Hanuman statue in Naduna, Labasa, last week has pleaded guilty to the charge in the Labasa Magistrates Court this afternoon.

Igenasio Masiwini is charged with one count of damaging property and has been further remanded by Magistrate Safaira Ratu.

He allegedly unlawfully entered a prayer house and removed the statue, which was later found damaged in the complainant’s compound.

Masiwini remained silent when questioned by Magistrate Ratu about his motives.

He told the court that he can pay $150 for the damage.

The Magistrate has directed him to obtain a Legal Aid Commission counsel to defend his case and apply for bail.

The matter has been adjourned to the 3rd of September.
