Of the 18 counts of sexual offences in March, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions confirms there was one incident where a 42-year-old man was charged with the rape of a 25-year-old man in the cell of Totogo Police Station in Suva.

The ODPP's Office confirms both the accused and the victim were cell mates at the police station when the alleged incident took place.

We have contacted Police on what type of security measures are in place in the cells at the police stations.

They are yet to respond.

Meanwhile there were 11 counts of rape, one count of attempted rape, two counts of defilement and four counts of sexual assault in March.

There were 12 accused persons charged with 18 counts of sexual offences.

Of the 12 accused persons, one was a juvenile.

12-year-old stepdaughter.

In another incident, a 40-year-old man was charged with two counts of rape of his 16-year-old stepdaughter, however, this matter was discontinued after the victim could not be contacted or located to give evidence.

There was one incident, where a 67-year-old man was charged with the rape of his 55-year-old
sister-in-law however, this matter was discontinued due to a false complaint.

A 17-year-old boy with an 18-year-old man and a 22-year-old man were charged with the rape
of an 18-year-old girl from their village.

A 37-year-old man was charged with the rape of his 37-year-old co-worker.

In another incident, a 48-year-old man was charged with the rape of a 30-year-old woman. The
accused is known to the victim’s family. The accused was also charged with one count of assault
causing actual bodily harm.

In another incident, a 31-year-old man was charged with the attempted rape of a 23-year-old
woman. The alleged incident took place during a drinking party.

There were two incidents of defilement of a young person, however, both the cases were
discontinued due to a false complaint and insufficient evidence.

Four cases were discontinued due to insufficient evidence, unavailability of victims to give evidence during trial dates and false complaints.
