Fiji's Nehemiah Elder has created history at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship 2024 as he set a new Commonwealth record in snatch and claimed a gold medal each in the Youth and Junior Category and a silver medal in the highly competitive Senior 89kg category.

The 15-year-old Marist Brothers High School student and Fiji’s Young Male Athlete of the Year shattered his own Oceania Youth snatch record of 125kg which he set earlier this year at the Oceania Weightlifting Championships in New Zealand.

In a stunning display of strength and determination, Elder lifted a massive 141kg on his third attempt.

He started off strong with 135kg, narrowly missing 140kg on his second try, but recovered just minutes later to make history with his incredible 141kg lift.

Today, Fiji’s Charlie Lolohea and Zion Tokona are lifting in the Men’s 96kg, Timothy Vakuruivalu is competing in the Men’s 102kg competition, Olimaipa Secivo and Elizabeth Waqavou lift in the Women’s 81kg competition while Sinate Savou and Australia’s Eileen Cikamatana will compete in the Women’s +81kg category.

Stay with us for updates.

The competition concludes tomorrow.
