1,041 people are still staying at 21 evacuation centres after their homes were severely affected by flash floods associated with Tropical Cyclone Josie over the weekend.

Director of the National Disaster Management Office, Anare Leweniqila says the evacuation centres are still open in Sigatoka, Navosa, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba and Tavua.

He says they have provided rations to the evacuees for two days.

Leweniqila says the Commissioner Western’s Office have also started distributing rations to the affected areas.

He also says the total number of people affected and the total cost of damage to the key sectors are still being assessed by the Commissioner Western’s Office.

RFMF teams from Nadi, Lautoka and Queen Elizabeth Barracks are supporting the clean‑up within the various municipal areas.

A team from QEB has been deployed and tasked to ensure that all schools are cleaned and ready for the resumption of classes.

Police teams from the west and central divisions also continue with the response and recovery work.

The National Fire Authority team also completed cleaning of the Rakiraki town and are providing support with the clean‑up operations in Ba.
