Despite efforts to promote economic inclusion, women’s participation in the workforce in Fiji remains low, and the rate of women’s entrepreneurship is even lower.

Labasa Town Council Chair, Paul Jaduram stressed this during the opening of the Northern Division Women’s Expo at Subrail Park in Labasa.

Jauduram says the government encourages job creation, community development, and social change.

He says the Expo features 158 women from Bua, Cakaudrove and Macuata, who will showcase a diverse range of artisanal products including finely woven mats, kutakuta, masi, hand-crafted jewelry, virgin coconut oil, soaps, and screen-printed items.

The Chair also highlighted the Council is committed to empowering women to actively contribute to economic development because, alongside entrepreneurship, women can control and benefit from resources and assets.

Jauduram adds this kind of empowerment leads to positive change in our communities.
