More than 500 families on Matuku Island in Lau will benefit from the Matuku Island Roads Upgrade Project after it was commissioned by Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau, which will provide easier access to essential services, schools and economic opportunities.
The upgraded roads connect the villages of Yaroi, Lomati, Raviravi, Makadru, Levukaidaku and Qalikarua, strengthening access across the island, where communities have traditionally relied largely on boats for travel.
The Matuku Island Roads Upgrade Project had an approved budget of $3.67 million, covering a total road network of 19.53 kilometres and serving seven villages: Natokalau, Yaroi, Lomati, Raviravi, Makadru, Levukaidaku and Qalikarua.

While commissioning the project, Ro Filipe highlighted the importance of reliable road access in supporting the daily needs and livelihoods of maritime communities.
He says the improved roads will benefit students and teachers travelling to Yaroi Primary School, Delaiverata District School, Qalikarua District School and Matuku Secondary School.
He adds that better road access will also make it easier for residents, particularly women and older people, to reach essential services and travel between communities.

The Minister says the upgrades are expected to support local economic activity, with farming and fishing remaining important sources of income for Matuku residents.
He says improved access to the jetty will assist farmers in transporting produce and facilitate the movement of goods and services, helping communities connect more easily with markets.
Ro Filipe adds that the improved road network may also create opportunities for local transport services and small businesses, supporting employment and socioeconomic development on the island.
The Fiji Roads Authority says the works undertaken included clearing overgrown road sections to improve accessibility and visibility, upgrading drainage systems and carrying out gravelling works to improve road conditions and access for communities.
FRA says these improvements are also intended to strengthen the roads' resilience during adverse weather conditions.
It adds that these road works reflect the continued focus on improving road connectivity in rural and maritime communities, helping to ensure that residents have more reliable access to essential services, education and livelihood opportunities.
