This was the message from the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai while opening the Ba Provincial Council meeting at Denarau in Nadi.
Major-General Kalouniwai says Fiji is facing several serious challenges, including rising HIV cases, drug-related problems, economic pressures, constitutional amendments and discussions about reinstating the Great Council of Chiefs.
He says these issues require principled leadership, responsible decision-making and respect for the law.
Referring to the military’s role in the country’s democratic process, the Commander stresses that the people’s choices must be respected and that the military must operate within the proper democratic process.
He also uses the example of a house to explain the role of the Great Council of Chiefs, saying it should serve as a place of protection and support for the people, with strong foundations needed to ensure it fulfils its purpose.
Major-General Kalouniwai also says members of the Council must understand their responsibilities and the trust placed in them, ensuring their decisions protect the interests of the people rather than simply following instructions without proper judgement.
He also highlights the importance of truth and reconciliation, referring to discussions about a Truth and Reconciliation Programme with the military in 2024.
He acknowledges that some people continue to carry pain from past events and says truth, healing, integrity and efforts to correct past wrongs are important for the country to move forward.
Major-General Kalouniwai further warns that traditional values and respect must be protected as Fiji faces social and political challenges.
He says love, cooperation, mutual respect and the spirit of solesolevaki are important values that help communities remain united.
He also stresses the need to respect Fiji’s diverse cultures, traditions and ways of life, while preserving values that bring people together.
The Commander says leadership must be guided by doing what is right, understanding traditional responsibilities and serving the interests of all citizens.
He says the Great Council of Chiefs has an important role to play in protecting the people and providing responsible leadership as Fiji works through its current challenges.
