Extra Bula FC has signed Australian-New Zealand defender Michael Boffey for the 2027 OFC Professional League season, bringing international playing experience and defensive strength to the Bula Warriors squad.
The 23-year-old left-footed centre-back joins the club after spending the 2026 season with Bentleigh Greens SC in Australia's National Premier Leagues (NPL) Victoria, where he made 21 starts and accumulated 1,856 minutes of competitive football.
Standing 187 centimetres tall, Boffey has played in Australia, Spain and the United Arab Emirates, bringing versatility, a physical presence and the ability to build play from defence as Extra Bula FC prepares for its second professional season.
Boffey says joining the club is a major opportunity and something he has been working towards for a long time.
He says he is looking forward to coming to Fiji, meeting his teammates and staff, and competing in the OFC Pro League next season.
His football journey includes a spell with FC Málaga City U19 in Spain before moving to CD Almuñécar City, where he was part of a league-winning and promotion-winning campaign in 2022.
He later represented Dubai City FC in the United Arab Emirates, gaining senior playing experience and taking on leadership responsibilities.
After returning to Australia, Boffey continued his development in NPL Victoria, representing Dandenong Thunder, Northcote City, Preston Lions and most recently Bentleigh Greens.
He was also part of the Preston Lions squad that secured promotion to NPL Victoria.
Boffey says playing in different countries has helped him develop both as a footballer and as a person, with Spain improving his technical game and making him more comfortable in possession, while the UAE exposed him to a more physical style of football.
He says returning to Australia and playing in the NPL has further strengthened his defensive and physical abilities.
Describing himself as an aggressive and proactive defender, Boffey says his strengths include one-on-one defending, recovery pace, aerial ability and progressing the ball from the back.
He is also comfortable playing on the left side of a central defensive partnership or in a back three, providing Bula FC with additional options in defence.
His decision to join Bula FC was influenced by the opportunity to play professional football, the club's ambition and the direction it is taking following its inaugural OFC Professional League campaign.
Boffey says conversations with his agent and the club gave him confidence in the team's direction, foundation, standards and culture.
He believes the move is the right step at this stage of his career as he looks to challenge himself in a new environment and continue developing as a player.
Although he has spent much of his football career overseas, Boffey visited Fiji on a family holiday as a young boy and says he has fond memories of the people, culture, food and natural beauty.
He has also followed Fiji's international rugby sevens success, as his New Zealand-born father is an enthusiastic rugby supporter.
Boffey says he is looking forward to becoming part of the Fijian community and experiencing the country's passion for sport.
Looking ahead to the 2027 season, Boffey says his goals are to become a dependable presence in defence, play as many minutes as possible, continue developing as a player and help Bula FC compete for silverware.
He says he wants to make a significant contribution alongside his teammates and staff and help bring silverware to the Fijian community by the end of the season.
Boffey also acknowledged the support of his family, who have stood by him through overseas moves, injuries and the challenges of pursuing a professional football career.
He also credited his agent, coaches and former teammates for helping him develop throughout his football journey.
As he prepares to begin his new chapter in Fiji, Boffey says he is looking forward to meeting the Bula Tribe and promises to give everything he has whenever he wears the club's shirt, with the aim of creating great moments and memories together next season.
