The shortage of teachers in specialised subject areas and the reluctance of some teachers to serve in remote communities remain major challenges facing Fiji's education sector.

This was highlighted by Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro during the launch of the Fiji Education Registration Authority's Online Teacher Registration Project today.

Radrodro says the Ministry of Education and FDRA continue to face several critical challenges that require immediate attention to strengthen the quality and delivery of education in Fiji.

He says these include shortages of teachers in specialised subject areas, teachers not willing to serve in remote areas, newly appointed teachers having limited coordination with colleagues regarding registration renewals, teachers reluctant to upgrade their qualifications and some not attending professional development programmes.

Radrodro is also urging teachers to take heed of these challenges and address them accordingly, stressing the importance of maintaining professional standards and accountability within the teaching profession.

Meanwhile, he says the newly launched online registration platform will make it easier for teachers to access FDRA services without having to travel to its office in Suva.

He says more than 13,000 Early Childhood Education, primary and secondary school teachers are currently registered with the FDRA.

He says since 2009, teachers have relied on traditional administrative processes to submit their registration and renewal applications and through the new platform, teachers will be able to submit registration applications, renew their registrations, upload supporting documents, monitor the progress of their applications and make payments online.

The payment options include Vodafone MPAiSA, Digicel MyCash and ANZ Bank.

Radrodro says the platform will particularly benefit teachers serving in rural, maritime and remote communities by improving access to registration services.

He also stresses that the digital transformation must be supported by strong governance, data protection measures and cybersecurity safeguards to ensure teachers' personal and professional information remains confidential.

The project was developed with support from the United Nations Capital Development Fund and the United Nations Development Programme and TFL.
