Ram Sami & Sons (Fiji) Ltd should stop treating workers like animals and start treating them like human beings, irrespective of whether they are from Bangladesh or Fiji. The rules should be the same for everyone.
This has been highlighted by Permanent Secretary for Employment Maritino Nemani as about 40 workers enter the second day of their strike.
They are demanding better working conditions, improved pay and recognition of the National Union of Workers as their representative.
While speaking to fijivillage News, Nemani says the company was fined about $15,000 in 2024 for carrying their staff in the same truck as they carry the chicken in.
He says following concerns raised by the workers, their OHS inspectors will be visiting the site today.
The Permanent Secretary also confirms that their chief meditator is conducting informal mitigation with the company and the union today.
Nemani hopes that the issue will be resolved today as workers need to be treated with respect.
Ram Sami & Sons (Fiji) Ltd is expected to provide a response later today.
