The Makete show runway showcased an array of creative talents

It was a dazzling night of glitz and glamour as the Makete Show 2025 showcased a stunning array of models and creative talents.

The event celebrated the achievements of more than 40 small and medium enterprise owners who came together to display their designs, artistry, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Gracing the runway were several contestants from this year’s Hibiscus Festival, adding an extra touch of elegance and excitement to the evening.

Co-creator of Makete, Shakira Ah Koy-MacDonald says the event was a celebration of community and the entrepreneurial drive that thrives at the grassroots level.

She says they are here to celebrate creativity in a society that is increasingly distracted.

MacDonald emphasized the importance of people and community support, saying, “without everyone here tonight, this show would not be possible.”

She paid tribute to her grandmother, Lavinia Ah Koy, who founded the Suva Flea Market in 1995—the same year Shakira was born.

Lavinia envisioned it as a safe space for women to explore their entrepreneurial and artistic talents, empowering them through business.

MacDonald shared that the market continues to thrive, now home to more than 200 MSMEs and through initiatives like the Pacifique Artisans Collective, which supports over 60 creative enterprises including designers, culinary artists, visual artists, and accessory makers the spirit of creativity and collaboration remains strong.

She adds the Makete Show is a reflection of that enduring legacy—a celebration of innovation, empowerment, and community.
