88-year-old Lautoka temple receives $14,875 washroom upgrade

More than 1,000 devotees who attend the annual five-day pooja at the Rifle Range Mariamman Temple in Lautoka will now benefit from improved washroom facilities following the completion of a $14,875 renovation project. The project was funded through the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs' Community Development Grant Programme and was officially commissioned by the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts, Charan Jeath Singh.Temple committee member Ranga Goundar says the improvements have brought much-needed relief to devotees, especially during the annual pooja, which attracts more than 1,000 people each day.Goundar says the old washroom facilities could not cater for the large number of devotees, while the leaking roof made them difficult to use during rainy weather. He says this is the first grant the temple has received and it will provide lasting benefits to the community.Goundar says the grant is not just financial support but a meaningful contribution towards preserving the temple, culture and traditions that bring communities together.Meanwhile, Singh says the investment has improved essential amenities, providing greater comfort, convenience and hygiene for devotees and visitors. He says while the project is modest in financial value, it delivers practical and lasting benefits to those who use the facilities.Singh adds that places of worship such as the Rifle Range Mariamman Temple are more than physical structures, as they are important centres of faith, cultural identity and community interaction. He says the Ministry remains committed to supporting community-based organisations through projects that improve essential facilities, preserve cultural and religious heritage and strengthen social cohesion.
