Families on Viwa Island are struggling to find enough clean water for drinking and cooking, while a district nurse reports cases of skin infections, scabies and diarrhoea, particularly among children, as prolonged dry weather affects the island's 427 residents.

61-year-old Venina Kula of Naibalebale Village says finding water has become one of the biggest challenges for families, who are searching for enough to drink, prepare meals and wash clothes.

She says the shortage has been particularly been difficult for mothers trying to meet their children's daily needs.

District Nurse Iliesa Ratuva says limited access to clean water is also affecting his ability to care for patients.

He believes the shortage has contributed to cases of skin infections, scabies and diarrhoea, particularly among children.

Ratuva is also concerned about dehydration and the risk of illness if stored water becomes contaminated.

According to the Water Authority of Fiji, Viwa Island has three villages and relies entirely on rainwater, leaving families vulnerable during prolonged periods without rain.

The Authority says emergency water supplies have now been delivered to affected communities and essential facilities as part of the Government's response to the dry conditions.

Water has been delivered to Viwa District School and its quarters, Viwa Nursing Station, Viwa Village and Yalobi Nursing Station.

Kula says the delivery has brought much-needed relief and peace of mind to families, particularly mothers who have been worried about providing enough water for their children.

Ratuva says the clean water will help residents maintain hygiene, prepare meals and reduce the risk of water-related illnesses.

The emergency delivery was coordinated by the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport through Government Shipping Services, in partnership with the Water Authority of Fiji and other Government agencies.

The Water Authority of Fiji says emergency water deliveries will continue to vulnerable maritime communities affected by the prolonged dry weather.
