Get ready to pay a bit more if you are catching a taxi, as the FCCC has approved a temporary adjustment to regulated taxi fares to safeguard the viability of Fijis taxi industry from the ongoing impact of rising global fuel prices from next Wednesday.
The FCCC says under the temporary adjustment, the drop charge for general taxi fares will increase from 10 cents to 14 cents per 100 metres travelled, an increase of 4 cents per every 100 metres, while all other fare components will remain unchanged.
They say no changes have been made to flag fall or waiting time charges, ensuring the adjustment is limited only to the component directly affected by increased fuel costs.
The FCCC says this adjustment follows significant increases in international fuel prices driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
They add following an independent assessment of industry costs, FCCC determined that a temporary adjustment to the distance-based component of taxi fares was necessary to ensure operators can continue providing reliable services despite rising fuel costs.
The temporary fare adjustment, which takes effect from next Wednesday, 1 July 2026, is intended to
ensure the continued viability of taxi services while balancing the interests of both operators and consumers.
