People could be further hit by higher costs as the Fiji Taxi Association has written to the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission requesting for a taxi fare increase as soon as possible.

General Secretary, Ashwin Lal says they want the drop distance to be increased to 15 to 20 cents for every 100 metres compared to the current 10 cents for 100 metres.

Lal says they are making the request on the basis that the Deed of Agreement between the Government and the Fiji Taxi Association in 2011 has expired.

Lal is urging the FCCC to consider their request as the prices of other products have increased.

FCCC CEO, Joel Abraham says he has received a letter from the Association however is seeking further clarification regarding their request.

He says the submission does not include specific details.

The last taxi fare increase was done on 7th November, 2011.
