Constitution Review Commission former Chair Sevuloni Valenitabua has been sworn as the Acting Attorney-General at the State House today.
The Fiji Government says the appointment marks an important occasion in Fiji's legal and constitutional administration, recognising the significant responsibilities of the Office of the Attorney General in upholding the rule of law and supporting the effective functioning of Government.
They say President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu congratulated Valenitabua on his appointment and extended his best wishes as he assumes the responsibilities of this important office in service to the nation.
They say as the Government's principal legal adviser and chief law officer, the Attorney General plays a central role in providing legal guidance and ensuring that government decisions and actions are consistent with Fiji's laws and constitutional framework.
The Government says Valenitabua brings approximately 29 years of legal experience, with a professional career spanning private legal practice, constitutional litigation, human rights and public legal services across Fiji and the Pacific.
His career includes serving as Commissioner and Proceedings Commissioner of the Fiji Human Rights Commission, Legal Adviser at the Public Solicitor's Office in the Solomon Islands, and Director of the Public Defenders' Office in Nauru, where he also briefly served as Acting Secretary for Justice.
Admitted to legal practice in Fiji and New South Wales in 1996, Valenitabua has extensive experience in criminal and civil litigation, constitutional law and legal representation before superior courts.
The Government says before entering the legal profession, Valenitabua served for 16 years as a secondary school teacher in Fiji, contributing to the education and development of young Fijians.
They say his appointment brings considerable legal and regional experience to the Office of the Attorney General as it carries out its responsibilities in supporting constitutional governance, the rule of law and public administration in Fiji.
The ceremony was attended by the Permanent Secretary for the Office of the Prime Minister, Dr Lesikimacuata Korovavala, Solicitor-General Robert Green and family members.
