A call not to re-instate the Senate was made during the Constitution (Amendment) Bill consultation at Lawai Village in Sigatoka, where it was recommended that funds to set up the Senate, should go towards an area that needs to be developed to benefit the economy.

Vuki from Vucilevu Village, was one of the two women that presented their views on the Bill, where she told the Parliamentary Special Committee on the Constitution that setting up the Senate will take us back to the colonial period.

She says we have tried to move away from the Westminster system and if we bring back the Senate, we are still stuck in the colonial period.

She further says that the funds could be used on infrastructure or any other areas that will benefit the people.

Vuki adds it will also be costly to bring back the Senate and not a good use of taxpayers funds.

The villager also shared her disappointment that only 90 minutes was given to the Nadroga/Navosa province to discuss an important issue.

The consultation brought together the community of Lawai where the community raised issues such as the removal of the immunity clause, resources and minerals to be owned by indigenous Fijians, the lands that the State took for public purpose to be returned to its rightful owner when that land are not used for its purpose, and Fiji and the Constitution should be founded by the word of God.
