Villagers on Lakeba Island in Lau are expected to spend less on fuel following the commissioning of the Lakeba Solar Hybrid Rehabilitation Project by the Minister for Public Works Ro Filipe Tuisawau.
The project aims to improve electricity reliability while significantly reducing diesel consumption, operational costs and dependence on fossil fuels.
The project costs US$2.5 million, with funding support from the Governments of the United Arab Emirates (US$1.5 million) and New Zealand (US$1 million).

Ro Filipe is currently on a ministerial project visit to the Lau Group, highlighting key infrastructure developments aimed at improving essential services and supporting sustainable development in maritime communities.
The Minister also commissioned the Lakeba Rural Government Station Grid Extension Project, which extended the existing electricity grid approximately 4.8 kilometres from Bau Depot to Waciwaci and Waitabu Village, improving electricity access for local communities.
The extension costs $422,473.31 and was funded under the 2024/2025 Capital Projects Programme.

Ro Filipe also opened a new depot for the Water Authority of Fiji in Tubou Village, which includes a workshop and facilities for maintenance and backup operations.
The renovation was funded by the Government through the 2023/2024 Public Sector Investment Programme at a cost of $160,370.13.
The Minister says these investments demonstrate the Government’s continued commitment to strengthening essential infrastructure, expanding access to reliable water and electricity services, and improving the livelihoods of Fijians living in maritime and rural communities.
Ro Filipe visited Matuku Island yesterday, where he inspected project sites and commissioned further Ministry infrastructure developments.
