A call for the removal of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) and the removal of immunity provisions has been made during consultations on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill held at the Rakiraki Village Hall in Navutulevu, Ra.
Sairusi Vakabogi from Mataso Village in Nakorotubu, Ra, told the Joint Special Committee on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill that having immunity provisions in the Constitution could provide an opportunity or open the door for any Fijian to conduct another coup in the future.
He says those who have broken the law should be held accountable under the law.
Vakabogi also supported the statement by the RFMF Commander calling for constitutional reforms to remove immunity provisions, end impunity, strengthen civilian supremacy over the military, and establish accountability for past political and military actions.
The Mataso villager also called for the removal of FICAC, and that taxpayers' money has been used unnecessarily.
He says some investigations were not handled properly by FICAC, leaving people questioning the status of those investigations.
Vakabogi says the work currently being carried out by FICAC should be transferred back to the police.
The villager also asked the Committee whether all proceeds from the use of land and resources could go directly to the landowners themselves.
