NFA urges public to observe fire safety precautions during Diwali celebrations

The National Fire Authority (NFA) is urging members of the public to exercise caution and prioritise fire safety during Diwali celebrations, following reports of fires recorded during the festival over the past three consecutive years.

Speaking during the NFA's Diwali media conference, CEO Puamau Sowane appealed to the public to take extra precautions when handling candles, diyas, firecrackers and electrical appliances throughout the festive season.

Sowane stressed the importance of keeping children under close supervision at all times, particularly when they are handling firecrackers, lighting diyas or playing near open flames.

He reminded families that while Diwali is a time of celebration, carelessness when handling fire and electrical equipment can lead to serious fire incidents, injuries and damage to property.

Sowane is reminding parents to keep candles away from children and a bucket of water or sand nearby when using firecrackers and traditional oil lamps.

The CEO wished all the people in Fiji a joyful Diwali.
