The Prime Minister’s office has clarified that former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase is not receiving pension as he was not entitled to it in the first place.
Permanent secretary, Colonel Pio Tikoduadua said they have only resumed the payment of pensions to former SDL Ministers and Parliamentarians who were paid pensions before.
He stressed that this was a privilege to all pensioners which was taken away but no decision has been made to pay the pension from today onwards.
Tikoduadua said they are currently looking into other benefits given to former Prime Ministers.
Government revoked the regulation of Pensions and Retirement Allowances Decree 2009 which was promulgated last December and following that pension was paid out yesterday.
