An estimated 34,000 people are hearing impaired in Fiji, 17,000 of which are children.
This is according to Carabez Clinic founder Bronwyn Carabez who said this is based on World Health Organisation statistics adding that majority of these cases are a result of Meningitis.
Carabez said some of the causes of hearing problems are ignoring ear infections and placing objects inside one's ear amongst others.
With the increasing number of hearing problems due to Meningitis, Dr Wahid Khan said firstly meningitis which is the inflammation of the lining of the brain, can be prevented by having your child vaccinated as meningitis commonly occurs with children under the age of five.
Khan added that if your child develops certain symptoms you must visit a doctor.
