A Fiji Human Rights Commission Chairperson and Ombudsman are yet to be appointed.

It has been confirmed that Dr Shaista Shameem does not hold this position any longer however Acting Director Kitione Radrodro said the Commission falls under the PM's Office and so continues to carry out its functions in an independent manner.

Radrodro said so far they are not aware of any appointment or re-appointment for the position of Chairperson of the Commission.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said a Chair will be appointed by the President, acting in his or her own judgement following consultation with the Prime Minister.

Sayed Khaiyum said Human Rights Commissioners shall be appointed by the President following consultations with the Prime Minister adding this obviously will occur once the PM has been able to consult with the President.
