The Attorney General and Minister of Communications has stressed that media foreign ownership has been restricted in the country as the media plays a critical role and needs a complete sense of stakeholder ship in the country.
Speaking as chief guest at the Fiji Media Watch Workshop "Empowering communities to be responsible consumers of the media" in Suva this morning, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum acknowledged the critical role that the media plays in informing the people daily about various important issues in society.
However, Sayed-Khaiyum highlighted that media in Fiji lacks a balanced coverage on stories and in-depth analysis of issues and there needs to more voices given to the marginalized groups in society as there is more coverage on the elite group.
Sayed-Khaiyum believed that there are also limited incentives for journalists to develop in their field.
He said this is an issue that needs to be addressed.
The two day workshop is currently underway with various media stakeholders attending in Suva.
