The Latter Day Saints Church believes that the decision by the government to set the legal marriage age at 18 will help reduce pre-marital sex.
LDS National Director of Public Affairs and the President of Fiji Council of Social Services, Nemani Buresova said all will also depend on the people getting married and their maturity level.
Buresova's comment comes after the Cabinet decision that males and females who turn 18 years can now get married legally without parental consent.
Cabinet has approved the amendments and therefore any person below the age of 18 years, whether male or female, will be prohibited from contracting a valid marriage.
In the previous law, girls could get married at 16 with parental consent and parental consent was needed for those who were below the age of 21 and wanted to get married.
