Fiji Taxi Association General Secretary, Rishi Ram has stepped down from his position yesterday.
In just 24 hours after Ram told Fijivillage that females should dress up in a presentable manner and not wear short skirts to avoid harassment and abuse by the taxi drivers, the association executives met and asked Ram to resign.
Association President, Vincent Singh has also apologised to all the women in the country.
But one of the taxi proprietors and association member, Rajesh Sharma said Ram should stay and a special meeting should be called.
When we asked Sharma why he is not addressing this issue with the association President, he said it never works out well.
Rishi Ram said he had no option but to step down.
He maintains his agenda was to educate female passengers to dress appropriately to avoid harassment and abuse by the taxi drivers.
Ram apologised if he hurt anyone in the process.
Ram has been the General Secretary of the Fiji Taxi Association since 1998.
