There is a typhoid outbreak in the interior of Naitasiri, mainly in the villagers of Sawanikula, Narokorokoyawa, Nasau and Korovou, whereby more than 100 people have been medically checked for the illness.
However, the confirmed number of cases is still yet to be finalized.
Medical staffs on the ground have confirmed that the outbreak is serious, they have placed a curfew for the villagers, and the doctors have been making regular visits to monitor the situation.
It is understood that all that are detected for typhoid are taken to Vunidawa Hospital while the serious cases are brought to Suva for further medical treatment.
The team on the ground is carrying out public health intervention, telling the villagers measures to prevent the spread of typhoid.
This is to always wash their hands thoroughly after visiting the toilet and after carrying out their chores, and wash hands before and after preparing meals, see that water supply is safe, proper sanitation and exclude disease carriers from preparing food.
Efforts to try and get a comment from the Health Ministry proved futile.
