64yr old man gets 3 years for sexual assault

A 64 year old man who sexually assaulted a 12 year old girl and later gave her 60 cents to keep quiet was sentenced to three years imprisonment by the Labasa High court this morning.

The victim and the man are from the same village and according to court documents, the girl regarded the man as her grandfather.

The man who is diabetic and has a leg amputated committed the offence in August last year.
    
While sentencing him, High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar said although he gives weight to his previous character, old age, illness and disability, these factors counterbalance the serious nature of offence he has committed.

Justice Goundar told him that prison authorities will monitor his diabetic condition, provide proper diet and will make arrangement for his mobility.

He is eligible for parole after serving 18 months of his sentence.
