Employment Minister, Parveen Bala

Employment Minister, Parveen Bala has highlighted that people need to understand that the National Minimum Wage Rate is for unskilled workers.

Bala also highlighted that the National Minimum Wage Rate consultations currently being held will be targeting the contributions from employers and workers covered under the formal and informal sector of the economy.

He says the exercise is in line with government’s commitment to protect the most vulnerable in society and providing them a basic standard of living to alleviate poverty.

After consultations held in Labasa, Savusavu and Suva, Bala says that the response has been positive and the Ministry has teams prepared address peoples concerns and queries about the National Minimum Wage.

Bala has also encouraged all employers, workers, and members of the general public to support and participate in this important national exercise to ensure the review is as inclusive, fair, evidence‑based and informed as possible.

The National Minimum Wage rate Consultations will be held in the Western Division this weekend.

The National Minimum Wage rate is currently $2.68 per hour.
