The Fiji Water Flying Fijians’ historic win over the Wallabies has been rewarded with a one-place gain in the latest World Rugby standings putting them in 8th place, one place behind Wales.

This has seen Australia slipping down two places to 9th place.

All the teams above Wales and Fiji in the rankings remain in the same position after victories against lower-ranked opposition.

Fiji’s win has also thrown the race in Pool C for a quarter finals spot wide open with Wales leading the way on 10 points.

Fiji and Australia are tied on six points after two matches with Fiji ahead thanks to their head-to-head record as teams chase the top-two finish that guarantees a place in the quarter finals.

There are now two scenarios for Fiji to qualify for the RWC quarter finals.

The first scenario will have to see Wales beating Australia, with or without bonus points and Fiji must win their last two games with or without bonus points which will put Fiji safely into the second spot.

The second scenario is tricky - if Australia defeats Wales at 7am Monday, it will lead to a situation where any of the three teams (Fiji, Wales or Australia) can make it to the quarter finals with Fiji still holding a chance to top the pool if they win with bonus points in their last two games, and Wales not to earn bonus points in one of their remaining two matches. Fiji will play Georgia in their third RWC pool clash on the 1st of October at 3.45am.
