Maciu Nalumisa instructs Committee to proceed with Ailava Samuels as Miss Fiji

Maciu Nalumisa instructs Committee to proceed with Ailava Samuels as Miss Fiji

In response to the statement by the Acting Prime Minister Filimoni Vosarogo, the Miss Fiji Pageant Committee has deferred to the line minister, Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa who has instructed them to proceed with Miss Ailava Samuels to represent Fiji to the Miss Pacific Islands pageant.

They say the statement by Acting Prime Minister Vosarogo contradicts Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Nalumisa who presented the same cabinet paper for approval.

The Pageant Committee says this confirms that Government does not and will not interfere in the operational decisions of independent pageant organisations, including the selection and appointment of representatives to regional and international pageants, as these are governed by the rules, licensing arrangements, and affiliations of the organising bodies.

They say they have received written confirmation from the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant Secretariat formally recognizing Miss Ailava Samuels as the registered representative for Fiji.

Any attempt to remove Fiji’s representative will result in Fiji being left without any representative to the pageant.

Subsequent to the Acting Prime Minister's statement, the line Minister Maciu Nalumisa has further instructed the pageant committee to disregard it and continue with its planned preparation.

Miss Fiji Dr Peggy Ravusiro will be reinstated and represent Fiji to the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant next month in Nadi.

After government intervention, Acting Prime Minister, Filimoni Vosarogo stated this afternoon that Government entered into a Service Agreement dated 3rd December 2025 with the Miss Fiji Pageant and the Miss Pacific Island Pageant for a $198,000 funding towards the two events.

Vosarogo says Cabinet had agreed to the provision of funding support for the Miss Fiji and Miss Pacific Islands in October 2025 following a submission by the Ministry of Local Government and Housing on the two events.

He says in addition to funding support, Cabinet had agreed that the winner of the Miss Fiji Pageant will represent Fiji in the Miss Pacific Island Pageant.

The Acting Prime Minister says now that the Miss Fiji Pageant has been completed resulting in the crowning of Miss Fiji, the organisers of the Miss Fiji Pageant are expected to respect the decision of Cabinet.

He says it needs to be understood that when Cabinet makes a decision on a matter, the expectation that such decision will be respected and followed.

Vosarogo says all processes, logistics, terms and arrangements, contractual or otherwise must align to the decision.

He stresses this is not just any decision, it is the decision of the apex body of decision making of the government and one cannot turn that decision any way one likes.

The Acting Prime Minister says as public funds are involved, it is critical that public confidence is maintained.

He adds that the nation looks forward to hosting the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant 2026, seven years after we welcomed the last group of Pacific Queens to our shores.
