Attorney General Siromi Turaga and FijiFirst MP Virendra Lal

Attorney General, Siromi Turaga has rubbished FijiFirst MP Virendra Lal’s accusations in parliament after Lal said the AG breached parliamentary procedures while giving his maiden speech.

Turaga told fijivillage News that Lal’s comments are irrelevant.

He says they know very well who drafted Lal’s speech, it is someone who is outside parliament.

Lal says the supreme law states that no religion should be given preference in official proceedings in Fiji in any way, shape or form.

He says right from the start of his maiden speech, Attorney General, Siromi Turaga, took it upon himself to pepper his comments with reference to Jesus Christ.

Lal says his first words in parliament should have been directed to the Speaker of the House, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, as that is what is laid down in the proper conduct of any Member of Parliament.

The FijiFirst MP adds Turaga started off with a quote from the bible before he proceeded to the formal start of his speech.

He says this was a clear breach of parliamentary procedure.

Lal says there are laws that a great many people do not like, whether it is the law on the use of marijuana or the Public Order Act that prevents spontaneous demonstration, but the law is the law, and until any law is altered by the proper processes, every citizen must comply with it including the Attorney General on the constitutional requirement of a secular state.
