Two men aged 21 and 45 years are dead after they were hit by a bus while fighting on the road in Waitolu, Naitasiri.

Director of Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana is reiterating their warning on the dangers of overindulging in alcohol as it could result in serious injury or death.

He says the two men, whilst allegedly intoxicated, were involved in a fight that ended up on the main road, where they were hit by a bus driven by a 30-year-old man.

SSP Divuana says the 21-year-old was pronounced dead at the Vunidawa Hospital on Wednesday, while the second victim, who was transferred to the CWM Hospital, passed away yesterday morning.

He adds the accident could have been avoided if the two men’s judgement was not impacted by alcohol.

SSP Divuana says the overindulgence of alcohol is a serious threat to all road users, whether they be drivers, passengers, or pedestrians.

He stresses that people should be responsible as they cannot stress enough the need for people to take responsibility for their actions.

The Director Traffic says two families are mourning the loss of their loved ones so close to Christmas, and they have been warning everyone about the dangers of alcohol as it slows down a person's reaction time and ability to make sound decisions regarding their safety, and road safety stakeholders will continue to push this message, however, the onus is on everyone to take the advisories seriously.

The national road death toll currently stands at 58 compared to 74 for the same period last year.
